Bandit

Foster or Adoptive Home Needed

Description

Name: Bandit
ID#: RT20230329-1
Estimated Birth Date: December 28, 2022
Sex: Neutered Male
Estimated Breed: German Shepherd/Doberman Pinscher Mix
Estimated Weight: 60 lbs.
Good with dogs: He’s not really dog selective but other dogs seem to be selective of him. He likes to be the dominant dog and needs a lot of work on learning social cues. Having a non-reactive and patient dog around to help him with this would be helpful.
Good with cats: Unknown. Seems curios and not overly aggressive when we’ve crossed paths with them on our walks
Good with children: Has been non reactive and curious with the kids we have encountered on our walks. So it seems likely he will be good with children with proper direction and training
Special/Medical Needs: Allergies to beef and chicken. Bandit is on a special diet due to quite severe stomach issues. He eats Hill’s Prescription Diet Potato and Venison recipe for food sensitivities. He can also have canned lamb (if it is purely lamb with no other meats like chicken in it). He chews lambs ears and dental chews that are plant based. And eats mostly lamb treats (but has done ok with freeze dried salmon treats too). ANY chicken or beef give him explosive diarrhea ⚠️ 🧨 💩 !!!!!
Estimated Energy Level: High
Current Location: Calgary, AB.
Adoption Fee: $650

Meet Bandit! This boy is all legs…and heart…and personality 😁. Ever wanted to own a giraffe, but couldn’t because welll…it’s illegal? Do not fear..Bandit is here! He has the body of a mini giraffe 🦒 and the soul of a monkey 🐒! He came to BARCs as a very young puppy from the Yukon Territories with his sister and was adopted shortly after that. Unfortunately he was returned, by no fault of his own, for being bigger and more hyper than his family expected he would be.
We think he is somewhere between 13-18 months old. His love languages are rubber chicken and fetch. So really…PLAY!!!! He will spend hours making the “tortured chicken” sound then hiding it in a blanket and finding it again. When we first started fostering him he was high energy but lacked stamina. Today, he likes to play for longer periods (30 minutes makes him happy). He will play fetch with balls -tennis, bouncy, big soft balls- he doesn’t discriminate , and he will also chase a frisbee and has caught it on occasion (he’s getting better). He also loves a good game of tug of war…but beware of your limbs - ⚠️ he’s likely to pull them off if you aren’t limbered up and ready for a good war!) Play makes him more settled and ready for cuddles and/or relaxation time. He will hunker down for a very sweet snuggle when it’s time and seems to enjoy watching tv.
Bandit is eager to please and learn. He is learning to walk with the Sidekick leash system and is doing quite well with it. He is also very treat motivated. He doesn’t really react to birds and squirrels, seems curious of cats (not sure if he’ll be good with them or not) and has been good and non reactive with the kids he has encountered on walks. He has a gentle soul, but prefers to be the boss and isn’t shy establishing his dominance with other dogs or humans. During play, he likes to wrestle with other dogs and often goes right to mounting and trying to hump them. If they assert themselves he keeps trying to dominate but will listen if you redirect him. He also doesn’t hold a grudge with those dogs for asserting themselves. He will need a strong pack leader to take the reins and get him to respect them and learn how to read other dogs’ social cues.

He has been very clean…no accidents to date (despite all the tummy issues he’s experienced). Bandit is also crate trained…although spending too much time in a crate all at once can cause him some anxiety. He really likes knowing where his people are and loves being a part of everything they are doing. You could say he’s a level 5 Cling-on😂! He also travels very well in a car, but again, it makes him a bit anxious and can cause tummy issues for a day or so afterward.
He is very curious and extremely smart. Puzzle toys, licking mats and other sensory toys are essential for this guy! He will chew up and eat stuffies but is good with tougher toys…he’s the strongest chewer we’ve ever seen…and we’ve had some strong chewers! Anything that squeaks makes him so happy. And it’s hard to let it annoy you when you see how very much joy these toys bring him! He has also started playing in our puppy pools. He will gently drop his ball in then slowly step in, one foot at a time to retrieve his ball. Then he will come back out and move to our next dog pool and do the same thing 😆.
We have recently discovered that Bandit likes to put his balls away in our ball bin when he’s done with them (without prompting) and picks out the next one he’d like to use. He is the sweetest, smartest boy who just needs a family and home to call his own and his life will be complete 💖. More than any other dog we’ve met, this boy loves to hear the words “good boy”. When we first uttered those words, the look on his face was a look like he has been waiting to hear those words his whole life….and they made him so happy! Anyone would be lucky to have this sweet boy in their life. And with the right family who understands and meets his needs, he will thrive and be living his best life!💜
