Indie is an affectionate and friendly dog with a submissive demeanor. She gets along with all dogs she meets and has impeccable manners when meeting new dog friends. Indie met a cat and when the cat made it clear it did not want Indie near, she stayed well away for the rest of the afternoon without any intervention from the humans. Indie is not a ‘barker’ and has only barked during play. Even when my resident dogs bark at the door, Indie does not join in.
Indie is friendly with all people she meets but a bit shy upon first greeting. Indie cowers a bit when she is scared and tries to move away from people who approach quickly/loud sudden noises. She finds a calm approach with a soft voice reassuring. She is a little shyer of men than women, but once she knows you are safe, she loves spending time with you and being snuggled. She can also handle faster movements/ volume when she is in ‘zoomie’ play mode.
Indie loves her crate. She will go into it in with the door open and just chill with her toys. She has been crated when we are at work and to sleep. Indie is still learning what are toys she can chew and what items in the house are not hers (though we have not had any mishaps). For this reason, a close watch, distraction with toys and positive use of the crate is helpful. She keeps her crate clean. Indie is house trained and walks nicely on a leash.
Indie is smart and trainable. She has been great with basic commands. She can sit, give a paw, and lie down. We have been working on ‘down’, ‘here’, ‘leave it’ and ‘wait’. She loves her kibble and treats, but also responds well to praise and affection. Indie will need further basic training but would also excel with further training for either biking, hiking, agility, etc. to keep her stimulated. Indie is a medium/high energy dog.
Indie has met a few small children and did well, but she feared their sudden movements. She currently is still learning to not jump up. She also can be mouthy when she plays and needs to be redirected by playing with tug toys, so she doesn’t mouth hands. For that reason, families with older children or experienced families with younger children that can spend time creating a respectful environment for Indie’s needs and teaching her how to play well with people would be the best fit.
Indie does well in the car despite fearing vehicles (both parked and moving). At the moment, she needs to be lifted into a vehicle due to her fear. On her long journey from Calgary-Kimberley she slept in her crate. She does not get carsick/pant/drool. On shorter journeys around town Indie just lies down on the seat. She disembarks by herself but in a controlled manner. Her fear of vehicles has lessened in the short time she has been in Kimberley walking on leash and becoming desensitized, so that is something that can likely be worked on.
Indie is a dog that is just learning how loving, safe, and fun the world can be. She is funny, sweet, affectionate, and awesome in so many ways. I cannot wait to meet the lucky human(s) who will get to call this clever sweetheart their adventure buddy!
