> Smitty would be an AMAZING dog for a home without children or those with teens. Although he loves kids, their sudden movements seem to scare him, and he can be protective of the adults in his life. He is loyal and loves 1:1 attention from those he attaches to. He loves to cuddle and get belly rubs. If given the chance, he would sleep in our bed at nighttime. Smitty does sleep in his crate at nighttime. He will go into his crate with no issues and sleeps for the entire night. He does not make a peep through the night. When he gets up in the morning, he prefers to eat and then go for a potty break. Smitty likes to play catch (with a specific ball). He loves anything he can chew on (including shoes and cords). Bones are a huge hit with him. During the day, Smitty can only stay in his crate for a short period of time. We have found he does better confined to a small space with the ability to see outside to watch the neighbours. When working at home, Smitty easily entertains himself. He will run up and down the stairs to look out the window and he will nap in his favorite chair or in his bed. He likes to lay in the sunshine. When everyone is home, Smitty is on the go to see where everyone is and what everyone is doing. Smitty eats well; he uses a slow feeder as he eats very fast. He is very food aware and motivated to earn treats. During mealtimes, he will nap under the table. Smitty knows how to sit and will sit at the door when he knows it is time to go for a walk. Smitty knows how to “shake a paw.” Smitty would be a great dog for agility, as he can
> jump high. Smitty has done well with a large group of people being at our house. When the doorbell rings, he does not seem to notice. He happily greets strangers. On walks, Smitty immediately starts barking when he gets outside. He will settle with treats of high value such as cheese When Smitty sees another dog during walks, he will begin barking. Smitty has a very loud and deep bark for the size of dog he is, and it might appear intimidating to others. The shelter reported that Smitty had dogmates, but we have not had the opportunity for Smitty to meet another dog. Smitty has sensitive paws to the snow and when cold/snowy, he can only walk a short period of time. He has a doggy jacket, which he will put on with no trouble. Smitty has had a bath and had his nails trim with no issues. He appears curious of water, and we wonder if he might like swimming. He has been away from us for 1 night and it took him some time to settle. He may whine or cry at the door because he is missing those he cares for. Walks, treats and attention help with this. If you are looking for a good, cuddly companion, Smitty is your guy.

Adoption costs: $650.00
