Mickey is such a sweet, loving, happy, and funny guy. Since coming into our home, he has gone from being scared of his own shadow to bouncing up and down every day with joy, ready for anything.
He is a super cuddler and definitely a "velcro" dog—he wants to be with you as much as possible. He is fully potty trained and crate trained. Mickey only barks when someone is at the door or when he wants to play with another dog. He consistently gets great report cards at daycare and gets along with almost all dogs and cats (he has been very gentle with our cats since day one).
Mickey loves the car and would be perfect for someone or a family who drives a lot—he doesn’t make a peep or whine unless he's excited to get in the car!
He was very food-deprived from what we can tell, so he can get a little overexcited at feeding time and generally wants to eat whenever anyone else does. But he's getting better with this every day.
We have another dog (female) who he adores, but he does try to eat her food, so he needs to be separated when feeding if another dog is present.
Mickey is just learning to play with toys—he loves stuffies and tug toys. As a bully breed, he enjoys destroying toys!
Since he is very strong (medium-sized, currently 60 lbs, but solid muscle) and always wagging his tail, I wouldn’t recommend adopting him if you have small children. He is not aggressive, but he still thinks he’s a puppy and doesn’t know his strength or understand personal space. While he sleeps a lot, when he’s awake, he has a lot of energy as he is still just under 2 years old.
Finally, our hope is that whoever adopts him showers him with affection and allows him to cuddle on the couch and in bed, as that’s when he’s happiest. Mickey has had an extremely rough life, with abuse and neglect from the time he was a puppy, so he really deserves a family or adopter that can give him plenty of attention, patience, and a gentle approach, while also committing time to ongoing training. We still can’t believe how far this pup has come in such a short time. It only took a few days for him to bond with us. He needs to be gently introduced to new people and dogs, as he can get overwhelmed by large groups or crowds.
He still pulls on the leash, but we’re working on this with him. He’s had sessions with a dog trainer and is already improving after just a couple of weeks. He still jumps on us when he gets excited (like when going for a walk), but again, we’re working on it.
Mickey understands the commands: wait/stop (great on walks), out, come, sit, yes, no, outside, and "easy" (meaning slow down, relax, etc.).
At the vet, they said he’s basically a “perfect” dog, considering what he’s been through. He will only get better with time as he becomes more relaxed.
Anyone would be so lucky to have this kind and loving dog!
