Meet Blue Fish (aka Finnick): Your Next Cuddle Buddy!

Are you looking for an affectionate, playful pup with a heart of gold? Meet Blue Fish (aka Finnick), an 8-month-old Shepherd mix who’s ready to fill your home with love, energy, and snuggles.

Personality and Background:
Blue Fish grew up a scrapper, picked up as a stray in a Bakersfield Walmart Parking lot. After sitting in the crowded shelter for 2 months, he was placed on the euthenasia list. Being a forever optimist, he used his big puppydog eyes to sweet talk his way onto a transport bus up to Calgary! His foster family have been calling him Finnick, or Fin for short. Partly due to his giant ears that resemble a fennec fox, and party due to his mischievous and goofy nature.

Super cuddly - loves a good cuddle and scritch, and will always try to sneak in some stealthy ear kisses when you're not looking. He's got a nice fluffy coat that's lovely to curl up with.

Gentle and easygoing - Always game for whatever is going on, and just happy to be included. We have not had any issues with fear or aggression, besides some unease in new situations. Calm during greetings, and happy to sit and observe the goings on around him.

Eager to Please —he’s quickly learning basic commands and enjoys solving interactive feeders like snuffle mats and puzzle feeders.

Home Habits:

Crate Training - He doesn't love the crate during the day, but when it's stocked up with cozy blankets and a couple toys he will make due. He is perfectly happy to sleep in his crate through the night, and will start snoring occasionally after a long day. Sleeps through the night with no issues.

House training - He picked up on potty training very quickly for someone who's never lived in a house before. He’s learning how to signal when he needs to go outside, and still likes using the buddy system and holding eye contact while he does his business so that you don't feel left out.

Self Care - From the first days when he showed up with raptor claws, he was more than happy to let me pamper him with a nail trim, bath, ear check, and tooth check. He is also content to be picked up and carried around if the need should arise.

Respect for personal Items -So far, he has been very thoughtful to not crew/shred or otherwise ruin my things. He has tried out a shoe and the corner of the coffee table, but has respected my firm "no" and redirected his chewing to appropriate items with very few reminders (and no casualties or damages). He is quickly understanding what items are for him and which are not.

Interaction with Others:

Gets along great with other dogs as well as humans. Introductions have been calm and respectful, with jumping saved for only his very favorite people.
He hasn't quite caught on to the whole "playing" situation, and is apprehensive with boisterous playmates that come on strong. I expect this will ease as he learns the ropes and makes a few friends.

He’s been good with my cats, although he is still working on understanding that they are not, in fact, just a small dog that wants to play with him. He has some instinctual prey drive that we are working through which is triggered when the cats run or jump, but this seems based in curiosity and play.
A bit apprehensive around strangers and other dogs on walks, but he doesn’t bark—he just stops to observe intently. With continued socialization and positive reinforcement I expect he will have a great neutrality to the world.

Likely to be good with children after proper introductions, He has met one 3 year old and was very neutral.

Activity Needs:

Finnick has a love for life that will require a human that indulges it. He was immediately great on a leash with very minimal pulling, so a leisurely walk with a morning coffee has become our morning routine that lets him burn off that early morning energy before his mid-morning nap. Then a good sniffy walk or play session in the afternoon is his idea of a great time. But once he’s done showing off his zoomies, he transforms into a certified couch potato. He’ll flop down like he just ran a marathon and turn into a furry sack of potatoes and cuddle up somewhere comfortable. Play hard, nap harder—that’s his motto! He is great in a vehicle, and has confidence loading and unloading himself. He will make a great adventure pup - He's also very photogenic and looks great in front of a scenic view!

Potential Challenges:

Separation anxiety: As a scrappy street rescue, Fin has some trust issues (don't we all). He is working on his independence, but will sing the song of his people when left alone. He has improved, and I expect he will continue to do so as he settles in and we build trust.
Prey drive: He’s got some instinctual prey drive, likely due to his shepherd ancestry. It primarily comes out when small things move quickly, aka birds and squirrels on walks. He has chilled out with the excitement when my cats move around, but it is a work in progress.
