Beautiful Pocahontas didn’t have the best start in life, but is ready to find her forever family to have the best life for the rest of her life. It’s hard not to fall in love with those beautiful blue eyes of hers, but once you get to know her, you’ll see she has the sweetest personality to match. She loves her people, but is not glued at the hip, so will often go off and find a toy to play with or engage her foster brother in a game of tug. Playing tug with you or another doggie friend is one of her favorite things! Going for walks is another one of her favorite things, which is great, because she walks fabulously on leash! She doesn’t react to other dogs, and actually moves to the side to give them space. She will however react when she sees a rabbit or small animal on a walk, but considering how strong she is, she’s quite easy to redirect. She currently lives in a foster home with a cat, and is okay with her 70% of the time, but the other 30% she can be a bit too interested, so feel it would be in her best interest to be in a home without small animals.
Pocahontas has long thick fur that will require continuous maintenance as is common with her breed. She came in quite matted and dirty, so she’s currently sporting the short hair look, but as it grows back, we’re working on getting her used to being brushed. She also came in quite itchy, which we believe was a combination of being so dirty, and a chicken allergy. She’s definitely improving since removing chicken from her diet, but would recommend that her future family keep an eye on this to ensure that’s the true or only culprit.
Pocahontas currently stays in an indoor dog run when her foster mom is away and at night, and does fairly well in it. She isn’t thrilled about it, but does settle as long as she can’t hear you moving about. She’s still learning to go to the bathroom outside, but is definitely learning quickly, and only has accidents at night, or if her foster mom misses the signs she needs out. Pocahontas is still learning how to be a family dog, so does occasionally jump up on you when she is really excited, and has been caught trying to get stuff off the counter, but responds quickly when corrected, and seems to understand it’s not something she should do, but sometimes the excitement does get the better of her. Pocahontas needs someone who will continue to help her learn the do’s and don’ts of being a member of the family.
Pocahontas has been really great about sharing food dishes and toys, but does need to be watched with a high prized item, such as a yummy treat or a new toy.
Pocahontas’ true personality is definitely starting to emerge, and true to her breed, she’s starting to try to herd her people. She thinks it’s a lot of fun, so something her forever family should either be familiar with or willing to learn about, as this behavior is absolutely a part of who she is. She’ll also need a family who is willing to keep her active as this would provide her with the best life possible. She would be happiest in a home with another playful dog to help her burn off that puppy energy or in a home that can keep her busy to ensure she is physically and mentally happy.
