Duncan
Duncan is the most gorgeous big boy with a beautiful sensitive soul who is looking for a calm, quiet and loving home to call his own. He absolutely loves his people and is an absolute sweetheart. He had quite a rough start in life. No shelter, bed, toys, nor enough food or water. He never had people who loved him except for the kind neighbours that looked out for him. He was very shut down and scared when he first came to Barcs but has come out of his shell nicely and is a giant love bug. Duncan is still a bit unsure in this new world and needs time to adjust to new situations (he will often go and hide if he is unsure). His new owners will need to be understanding and patient with the big guy and ensure he feels safe.
Other Dogs: Duncan loves other mellow good natured dogs and is wonderful with the three other dogs (both large and small) in his foster home. He enjoys wrestling and playing chase around the yard. He would love a home with another mellow furry friend. Until Duncan can gain more confidence and recover from his past, off leash dog parks should be avoided. He has shown some fear based reactivity in defence when he feels cornered or unable to run away and hide from a situation such as another dog playing too rough or aggressive. The big thing for this beautiful boy is that he needs to feel safe.
Kids: teenagers and preteens only. Young kids are too much for the big sensitive guy. He would be ok with kids visiting the home, but might also choose to spend that time in his kennel, which should be respected.
Cats: He is great with cats and will even allow them to snuggle up to him.
Walking: Duncan walks well on leash using a halti or sidekick with minimal pulling. He again has showed some fear based reactivity when walking past another dog who is being reactive on leash, which seems to stem from his inability to flee the situation. He is fine if you give him some distance when walking past a leash reactive dog. His new owners should expect to continue to work with him on his leash skills.
Activity Level: He is a moderately active guy and would love to go for daily strolls with his owners. He also would love a home with a yard he can troll around in and lounge in the shade and snow.
Kennelling: Duncan loves his kennel (his “house”). It is his safe spot and you will often find him going in there by himself to relax. He will need a kennel and quiet place set up in his new home to help him settle in and feel safe.
House Training: Duncan has never had an accident inside his foster’s home despite never living outdoors. He seems to understand that he does his business outside and on walks and has quickly learned this from the other dogs in his foster home.
Favourite Things: Belly rubs, belly rubs and more belly rubs with a side of head cuddles and kisses. Playing with his toys, walks, furry foster siblings and lounging in the snow.
Guarding Behaviours: Duncan does guard his food with other dogs (not his humans) as he never had enough and came into Barcs very underweight. He is fed in a separate space from the other dogs in his foster home, and enjoys the peace and quiet to enjoy his meal. He does also occasionally show guarding behaviours with his toys, but not always, and is responsive to correction on this. Again, he never had toys of his own, so it is understandable but something that will need to be watched and monitored.
Duncan needs a loving and calm home that can help him continue to build confidence and flourish. He has a such beautiful soul and really deserves the best.
