Notorious Big, or as we call him Barkley, came to us as a very scared and shut-down boy. He wasn't sure of anyone but wanted so badly to trust and be loved. After a few days of seeing my pups run around the house, he decided it was time to be a part of the pack.
We have been teaching him lots of fun things: running around the house, chewing on the best chew toys and bones, relaxing on all the different dog beds, and even getting comfy on the couch. Hanging out under the Christmas tree isn't so bad either. Barkley has been showing us his goofy and fun personality; each day, we get a little more. Today (day 10 with us), we finally got to hear his bark. It’s not a very loud bark, and he doesn’t use it often. It is so much fun to see him grow each day and become more and more comfortable.
Barkley is completely treat- and food-motivated. We are working on his potty training. With regular outside breaks, he isn't having accidents in the house. I do put a belly band on him at night just in case he gets up before my alarm goes off. He does need to go out right away once he gets up. An accident at night has only happened once. He usually sleeps through the night in his bed beside mine.
I do not kennel Barkley at all. He hates the kennel and cannot be put in one. He had a very bad experience in a kennel. Barkley has always had free run in my house. He has not destroyed anything. He does drag our shoes around but has not chewed them or caused any damage. We have left him alone for 4-5 hours in the house.
He is good in the car, but since he doesn't like being picked up, we don’t go for many car rides. Barkley does walk well on a leash and enjoys his outside time. We have been very lucky with nice weather, so he gets to explore outside quite a bit. He doesn't seem to be bothered by the snow.
Barkley eats when he is hungry. He does not need to eat every bite that is out for him. The food bowl gets looked at in the morning and evening. If food needs to be added, I will top it up. All four dogs share the food bowls. There is no food aggression, and sometimes he just waits for his turn to eat.
Barkley is so loving and fun. He has quite the quirky personality and goofy little acts. He trips over his feet all the time. Even if he isn't moving, he still finds a way to trip himself. When he lays on the floor, his back legs are always straight out. If he wants to walk but not get up, he drags his back end around the house. He gets along with every dog he has met. He truly just wants to be everyone's best friend—actually, he already thinks everyone is his best friend.
Be careful though—if you move even an inch, he will get in closer. He loves to cuddle, and if you move, he will take your place ASAP. He is a seat thief, and he is very good at it. You think he is sleeping? Well, he is not. He is feeling your every move with his eyes closed, and when you move just enough, POOF, your seat is gone, and you find yourself standing up. Did I mention he is a trickster too?
Barkley, with his big personality, will be an amazing addition to any family. I have not tested him with small kids, but I see no issue with him being amazing. I think he would love a kid of his very own. I have not cat-tested him either, but I do not see why he wouldn’t be good.
