BackBrian
Available for Adoption
Description
Name: Brian
ID # A155756
Estimated Age: 4 years
Sex: Neutered Male
Estimated Breed: Chihuahua Mix
Weight: 24 lbs.
Good with Dogs: We haven't had the opportunity to introduce Brian to another dog in a controlled setting, however when we have gone for walks his responses to dogs haven't been positive. He does react quite aggressively. He would definitely respond well to some training and controlled introduction with an instructor with other dogs.
Good with Cats: No
Good with Children: Untested
Special/Medical Needs:
Estimated Energy Level: Medium
Current Location: Calgary, AB.
Adoption Fee: $650
Do they bark
He has been known to bark at large trucks and at other dogs
He does whine sometimes when he knows he is going for a walk but seemingly out of excitement
sometimes will bark in his kennel in the mornings when he is ready to get up
Are they house-trained
yes - has marked his territory before but only in settings where dogs have been prevalent
Are they good in the car
yes
we have taken him on a road trip and with us on a couple outings, he has done quite well. We put him in the crate for a 4 hour trip and he sits in the backseat when out of the crate.
Are they good on leash
He definitely has not been leash trained.
We are actively working on this - bringing treats on walks, rewarding him with learning "heel" and pausing to sit and wait as people walk by.
He does the best on his harness, wouldn't recommend just using the collar as he is a active puller
He did manage to yank himself free one day and ran into the road, we did catch him but he thought it was a game.
Loves his stuffed avocado: it was clear that Brian hasn't had a toy before, it took a few days before he responded to toys, now he loves playing with this toy.
LOVES WALKS - this is his favourite time of the day.
He also loves his kong with peanut butter as a special treat and fish skin.
He is responding well to food we haven't had any trouble with his stomach
We are slowly crate training, he is sleeping in there at night alone sometimes he can have the door open other nights he needs it closed
We have left him alone without locking him in the crate and he has done great - no accidents, destroying furniture or other issues he usually just sleeps in his crate
He is a very friendly guy - sometimes too friendly - we are teaching him boundaries. He will invade your personal space and stay there. We are slowly teaching him "no" and only giving positive pets upon him being calm and laying down.
It was clear he didn't know any commands and his behaviour mirrored that of a puppy - we are teaching him to sit, lay down, stay and shake a paw. He is learning fast!
He does great with food, he is a very food oriented dude.
He doesn't like his neck being touched sometimes and has difficulty putting his leash on we think this is excitement related tho.
We think Brians ideal home would be somewhere with a big yard, an active family that can give him walks and the attention he deserves. He has a lot of love to give and anyone would be blessed to have him! Maybe ideally a family without pets that has the time and ability to give him the training and the slow introductions he needs in this area.
