Are you looking for a fun-loving, gentle and loyal pup? Alo is your girl!
Wanna play? She's game! If not, she also easily plays on her own with toys or things she finds that she thinks are toys. Alo loves the outdoors, and thrives in a place with a backyard for her to run around and have fun. She would do great in a home with another playful doggy sibling, but is equally great as an only dog.
Despite Alo's playful spirit, she settles down quickly after a game of fetch or a walk, and is quite calm and quiet even in hectic environments with lots of people like at the home and garden show. She has been nothing but sweet and gentle with her foster parents, strangers and kids:
- She hasnt jumped on people, calmly greets them with slow tail wags,
- Gentle with her mouth during during play,
- Takes treats oh so delicately from one's hand.
- No resource guarding for toys nor food with humans (does guard bones with other dogs)
- Responds quickly to gentle corrections
Alo also has shown a knack for quickly learning tricks (sit, touch/target, leave it, stay) - although we are still working on her commands in more distracting environments. Everytime she succeeds she gives lots of tail wags and is very proud! She also enjoys chewing, hiding and uncovering her bone throughout the day, doing puzzels and rolling around on her bed, as these activities, along with some exercise, keep her from being too mischievous while foster parents are working. She is an affectionate girl, giving her paw or a little boop with her snoot when she wants scratches or rolling over for some belly rubs.
Additionally, Alo is:
- house-trained (stands by the door to show she needs to go),
- rarely barks inside or outside, even when foster sibling or neighbours dogs are going crazy! She stays chill. We have rarely heard her bark.
- She sleeps nicely in her crate at night.
During walks Alo is quickly building confidence of all the novel things she is experiencing in her new environment. She has not barked nor lunged at other dogs during walks, but does get spooked by sudden or novel sounds, people or animals, or she fixates intensely on things she nervous about. If a stranger or dog approaches her too quickly, she backs away and immediately distances herself from them - no aggression. She also pulls if there is a very interesting smell, but a halter collar has been great in redirecting her gently. With leadership, positive enforcement ( lots of hot dogs and cheese!) and patience, she is learning to overcome her fears during walks, demonstrated by getting less spooked over time and continuing walking forward instead of avoiding things that make her nervous.
Alo is great with other dogs, but since she is timid and cautious, she benefits from slow introductions, giving her a bit of time to sniff and assess. Afterwards she'll try her luck at playing with them! She has been great with her smaller foster sibling, trying many times to play with him, but he just hasn't been interested, so she leaves him alone.
Alo bonds very quickly to people and animals, and it is very apparent that as much as Alo loves cheese, toys, the outdoors and playing, what she treasures the most is her family, her pack. Its so precious to her, that when one member leaves, she gets scared of losing them. Alo is making large strides in learning to stay and relax in her safe space while family are out of sight, not following her foster parents while they go about in and out of the house, as she receives lots puzzles and treats, and they always seem to come back when she is calm and relaxed.
Alo is just a wonderful dog who brings joy to those around her, and Alo's future family will be so lucky to have her in their lives!
