His government name is Van Cleef, but we’ve taken to calling him Fidget (after the bat in the children’s movie, The Great Mouse Detective, for obvious reasons).

Fidget has been a joy to foster over the past ten days! I would say he is about 90% potty trained, and overall he has only had a few accidents in the house. He hasn’t gotten the hang of letting us know when he wants to go out just yet, but as long as we take him outside every hour and a half to two hours, we can completely avoid accidents.

Fidget has been great with other dogs, he needs a bit of a slower introduction with big dogs, because he’s just a little guy and can get a little overwhelmed, but once he meets them he’s happy to play! He also walks much better when alongside/trying to keep up with other dogs. When he walks alone he is largely uninterested in walking, and often lags behind or tries to pull back towards home. I think his ideal home would have another, dog friendly dog for him to play and walk with. He hasn’t met any children, but I can’t imagine he would any problem with dog-savvy kids.

Fidget also gets along great with our resident cat, Ruby. They don’t play together, but are happy to be in the same room, largely ambivalent about each other. He does not ever bark at (he rarely barks at all, actually) or try to chase her.

He has not displayed any food aggression towards dogs, cats, or people. We usually just keep his food bowl full and let him graze throughout the day. And while the car is certainly not his favourite thing in the world, he’ll sit nicely in the passenger seat, shaking occasionally due to nerves. He would prefer to be in someones arms, for sure, but he doesn’t get car sick or bark while in their, even if he is sitting alone.

My main concern with Fidge is that he may have slight separation anxiety. He loves to be around his people, and will follow one of us around the house, sometimes crying if we’re out of his view. I work from home, so he is rarely alone, and I think his ideal home would have a similar work from home or stay at home situation. When he is home alone, we put him in his crate, and haven’t tested him in the house on his own just yet, though we have never seen any destructive tendencies from him.

Fidget sleeps through the night in his crate no problem, I can count on one hand the number of nights he’s woken me up, and when he does I just take him out to pee, put him back in his crate and he’s good to sleep through the rest of the night.

Fidgets only real non-negotiable is that he has to be allowed on your couch! The couch is his favourite place in the entire world, and if no one is on it, he will run up to you and try to get you to chase him over to it! He has some puppy energy, but once he spends about half an hour getting it out of his system, he is happy to snooze on the couch for hours at a time. Overall, he is a great, low maintenance puppy who would be the perfect fit for the right family!
