Zoey is absolutely living her best life now but that wasn’t always the case. Zoey came into rescue with her ten 2 day old puppies in tow, and it quickly became evident that Zoey’s health was not in the best shape. Zoey was experiencing lameness in her back end and lack of bowel control, which originally made it even difficult for her to get around and she had no idea that she was dropping poop constantly. She was also experiencing lots of tummy troubles which just made the situation worse for her. But through it all she was still the best mom she could be to her babies. Zoey was sent for x-rays on her back end to try to understand why she was having the issues she was. The news was not what anyone ever wants to hear. She had a tail break where the tail meets the body from a suspected hard pull. Her condition was done to her. ☹
Over the last few months Zoey has gained back her strength in her back end, even to the extent that her foster mom has to put boxes on the pool table to keep her from jumping on it. All her tummy troubles have now resolved, but due to her previous abuse, she still doesn’t have control over the bowels. She seems to have made some progress as she now cleans herself which originally, she wasn’t, and she does go out and poop like a regular dog would, but she’s unaware when poop leaks out. We won’t sugar coat it, Zoey does leak a fair bit of poop still, but as the nerves were damaged, it takes a long time to heal. The vets feel she just needs more time, up to a year, and it’s about a 50/50 shot that she will fully recover and have no lifelong affects from her previous abuse. She may always have some poop leakage but as we have seen some improvements, we remain hopeful this won’t be the case.
With all that, Zoey is absolutely living her best life. Her babies are all moving on to their forever families, and Zoey has taken on the role of stepmom to any foster puppies that her foster mom brings home. Zoey is fabulous with other dogs! Zoey loves to sit outside in the sun or play chase with whichever foster pups are in the home at the moment. She adores people, sometimes too much so is still trying to learn that she shouldn’t jump up on people to greet them. Zoey loves to go for walks, but does pull, and is super eager to meet every dog she sees even if she is told she can’t.
Zoey’s ideal home would be one that will accept her situation as it is with the understanding that it may never be perfect. She deserves to have a forever family to love her, give her all the attention she craves and show her every day that her worst days are behind her.
