Meet Bruiser Brody, the excitable young dog that's so ready to find his forever home.
He was found wandering the streets in California before coming to Alberta so his past is unknown. However, his behaviour does reveal some things. I'm happy to report that his experience with people must have been largely positive as he came into care healthy, a good weight, loves people and craves affection from his family.
Despite loving people, he will bond with his primary caregiver pretty intensely to the point that he gets separation anxiety when his person is not around. Crate training has been key to managing this and he has already improved leaps and bounds since coming into care so it will be important for his family to continue this to keep him safe. He is best suited to a detached home as he will cry for the first few minutes without his person.
He is energetic and very athletic for such a little guy. I suspect his breed is actually a Boston Terrier mix as he is built like a tiny tank and would be a great hiking or jogging partner. After his exercise needs are met he does relax, happily napping the day away. It is clear that he has been exposed to the world in his past life and mainly ignores bikes, skateboards, cars and so on.
He's super adorable and his body turns into a wiggle machine from just looking at him. He has no prior training & lacks impulse control around things he wants like food and will jump to try and get what he wants. We've been working on this with him rewarding calm behaviour and teaching him that it's best to keep all paws on the floor. He will thrive with a family that is able to continue his training and offer some structure so he can become the best version of himself. Although he doesn't live with kids, he walks by parks regularly and does not seem scared or bothered by kids screaming and running around and even likes getting some pets & attention. Because he is so excitable he is best suited to a home with older kids who will not be scared while he's learning his manners.
Like everything else with Bruce, he is still learning his manners around dogs as well and becomes over excited when seeing them on walks. Sometimes this can bubble into mild reactivity when he realizes he can't go play with everyone. He is super food motivated so he has been easy to redirect and is starting to learn to focus on his handler when faced with distractions. He requires slow and proper introductions to other dogs but if this is established properly, he has successfully integrated into the family pack which includes a dachshund foster sister and three other dogs we socialize with regularly. He does not appreciate being barked at by other dogs so balanced yet playful dogs would be a best match.
He has a great nose and after he's mastered some basic commands, he would be a great candidate for scent detection or barn hunt. He is untested with cats but likes to chase rabbits and squirrels so a cat-free home would be best.
He already knows how to fetch and loves to play with toys. He's a true California boy and does not like the cold, I've already put clothes on him and he wears them like he was destined for fashion. He doesn't know how to ask to use the washroom but he's had a few accidents inside if taken out regularly.
Car rides are a little stressful for him right now, but given his long trip from California who would blame him. With repeated exposure he will get there soon enough.
This sweet soul has so much potential and will make one lucky family looking for a pocket sized cutie patootie of an adventure bud very happy.
