Are you looking for your new summer patio buddy? Do you like vacuuming? Hate wearing black? Enjoy afternoon naps and gentle walks around the block? Always wanted a shepherd but lack the space and stamina to exercise one? Willing to do some basic training and want a young dog to enjoy all the goofiness of having a puppy, but don’t want to go through the velociraptor stage of life? Well Owen may just be your perfect match!

Owen’s face may be masked but his heart is wide open ❤️ Like any super hero he does have a slightly painful origin story, but he’s come back swinging. He originally belonged to a homeless person in California but sadly when his owner was arrested he ended up in the shelter. He was found to have an old, likely traumatic, healed injury to his left hind leg, but still moves around fine on it and is more than capable of showing you his wild puppy zoomies! Because of this though he won’t be your next running buddy and outside of short zoomies of joy, prefers to live life at a slower pace. He will need someone who realizes that even though his body isn’t 100% perfect, he has so much love to offer. There are a few very easy modification he’ll need to support his joint health long term, such as he will need to maintain a healthy body weight (no excess treats/obesity, even if he has champion puppy dog eyes!), minimal jumping up, and no aggressive exercising. We have started him on an inexpensive joint supplement in foster care to help him be the best version of himself.

Owen is as joyful as they come and loves all people he’s met so far. He is a non-discriminatory snuggler and would prefer to spend his life cuddled up against his people as much as possible. He does cry in his crate sometimes, but makes no moves to try and escape, this has been slowly improving with time. Due to his tendency to voice his sadness when you leave though, he likely wouldn’t be suited to an apartment life. Unless you really don’t like your neighbours. Outside of this though, he is a very quiet house guest and we haven’t heard him make a peep. He has so far been left alone in his crate for up to 4 hours without incident. He has likely never been inside a home before foster care, so doesn’t know how to ask to go outside, but has so far had no accidents in the house with diligent bathroom breaks.

Owen is a pleasure to walk on leash, he doesn’t pull and is non-reactive to dogs even if they bark at him, although he may try and steer you towards people to visit. He is so petite though, that even if he were to decide to pull, he would be very easy to manage. He is excellent with our resident dogs and loves to play. He is more on the submissive side and reads cues from our senior dog well when she’s had enough play. Owen has excellent recall and is a classic “Velcro dog”. He is figuring out toys but loves bones. He is extremely gentle with taking treats, is highly food motivated, and has a very soft mouth even when he’s excited and wants to put his puppy mouth on you! He is incredibly smart and is already beginning to pick up basic commands like sit.

Overall Owen would likely fit well into most households, provided they are willing to continue his training. He could go to a single or multi dog home provided his new fur siblings aren’t too rough in their play style. We haven’t cat tested Owen yet but this could be arranged for a serious potential adopter.
