Meet Asuka (Suki)
Have you ever heard of a dog who doesn’t bark? Well, that’s her! She is the sweetest and fairly well-behaved.
Suki was very nervous and unsure when she arrived, but she loves people — anyone and everyone is just a new friend waiting to be met. She adores belly rubs and rolling around on the sofa or bed — she’s a grade-A napping machine! She hasn’t shown any signs of aggression or resource guarding, though she does seem more wary of people (including myself) when she’s wearing her harness.
She is medium-low energy and hasn’t quite figured out how to play with toys yet. She loves basking in the sun in the yard but doesn’t do much more than that. She’s not a fan of cold or rainy weather.
Suki is working on her crate training and will go in on her own when told to — I’ve been reinforcing this with treats. She sleeps in her crate through the night without a peep and will also go in for meals. However, she needs quite a bit of work when it comes to being left alone. My downstairs neighbour has let me know that she will whine all day non-stop, whether crated or left loose in the house. She seems to have some separation anxiety and would do best in a home where someone is around most of the time or is willing to work with her on this.
She walks beautifully on a leash, stopping occasionally to sniff, but she listens well to “come” without hesitation. I’ve also taken her jogging and hiking — she did great with both!
Suki is house-trained. The only accident she’s had was after refusing to go out in the rain. She has, unfortunately, been mildly destructive while left alone, having chewed on cat toys, a charging cord, and a small wallet. I believe this is due to boredom or anxiety when she’s by herself. I’ve never witnessed the destructive behavior firsthand — it only happens when I’m not home.
She has met my cats and couldn’t care less about them, so she would do well in a home with cats. While I’m unsure how she is with kids, I imagine she’d be fine given how sweet she is. She has lightly barked at a few dogs while out on walks, but usually pays them no attention. I’m not sure how she’d do living with another dog, but with proper introductions, I believe she would adjust well.
The car is still a bit scary for her — she tends to curl up in a ball. I’ve only driven with her twice, so it could just be nerves from the unfamiliar experience.
She gets super excited to greet me when I wake up or come home, often jumping up and getting very animated. She has claimed “her” chair in the living room and loves snuggling on the bed. She’s a big cuddle bug and would absolutely love falling asleep next to you. She’s also a connoisseur of perfect grass and will roll to her heart’s content if you have a nice lawn (or pass one on your walk).
Overall, Suki is an incredibly sweet dog who would make a wonderful addition to a home that’s ready to love her as much as she’ll love you.
