Meet Waterton: A sweet soul who is gentle, polite, and eager to please.
Who she is:
⭐Waterton’s foster mom has been calling her Aster because this gal is s a shiny star and adorable little alpine flower all rolled into one clever Collie Cross. She clearly just wants to be loved and to please her people. Aster melts the heart of everyone she meets and having been such a good momma to her pups she is now ready for a forever home where she can be loved the way she deserves. Seriously, this dog is special and will make a fantastic companion to a lucky adopter.
🤗Why she is perfect:
✔️Adores other dogs! She whines with excitement when she sees them and is easily distracted with positive training. When she is allowed to meet them, she is curious, lovely, and respectful. If the dogs are hesitant from afar, she lays down to signal she is safe. She has doggy boundaries already built in!
✔️Potty trained! She has not had any accidents and is learning to let people know when she has to have a bio break. She understands ‘go pee’ already.
✔️Good on leash! Again, with positive training she is learning to trust. She doesn’t pull and the most she will do is whine at other dogs and/or sit and stare at things that give her pause. She moves on with gentle coaxing. This has been improving quickly within a short time.
✔️Good with Cats! Her foster home has three dog savvy cats. Proper introductions were very successful and she is trying very hard to make friends with them but they are kind of snobby. She does manage to try fit into their cat beds in an attempt to fit in.
✔️Easy to Train! She is a Collie mix so it goes without saying, this muffin is smart. She has been coming out of her shell more and gaining trust and confidence. Leash training and getting to know the world has been the focus so far. Her foster mom is working on the basics of sit, lay down, and stay. Recall is literally smiling at her and demonstrating to her you are safe. If wanting to rename her, it won’t be a problem. If you don’t want her on the bed or couch, you simply don’t invite her and/or ask her to get down.
✔️Crate trained! Once she is in her crate, she is a very quiet and good girl. She has been crated for extended periods without concern. She has been left alone without a crate for 2 hours and there were no concerns but you would want to work up to this.
✔️Barking is just to show she cares! She will bark when doing her nightly window checks once or twice but she will move to soft growls or no noise at all with gentle redirection.
✔️Best cuddle buddy ever! She loves to cuddle up but she also doesn’t crowd your space on the couch or bed, unless you want her too. Which you will.
Will work for kibble and love! Treat training is easy and cheap with this one. Just using her regular food.
😘Her cute quirks:
💖Doesn’t love getting into her Crate: Getting her into her crate does not require any wrestling but she is clearly not thrilled to go in there. This is being worked on with high-value treats and lots of praise, which is working wonders. Once she is in the crate, she is great. This will require ongoing patience to ensure it becomes a happy place for her.
🥺Doesn’t love care rides: This is being worked on with patience and positive reinforcement. She doesn’t bark or do anything destructive in the vehicle but you can tell she is scared…and that makes her foster mom sad…because Aster is such a good girl.
😱Luxury vinyl plank is terrifying: She is good with the plank now but she wouldn’t walk on it at first. Heck, she once saw a large pile of soil amongst grass and was hesitant to approach it. What her foster mom is saying, is that the urban jungle is clearly new to Aster and she requires patience and ongoing confidence building. Helping do this is super rewarding because once she trusts you it does not take long for her to ease into her surroundings and watching her shine is very sweet.
💪She is recovering: Aster had puppies when she came to BARCS. She is gaining weight, muscle, and stamina. This needs to continue before she goes on any epic hikes, which we think she will love. Rest assured this gal is recovering well and quickly.
😳Shy with some men: She is receptive to men once she knows they are safe, which does not take long. As long as proper introductions are done, she will be fine.
🚸Children: She is good with older children and has not met younger kiddos. Aster is a sweetie but she is still a herding breed. To avoid complications, it is best she go to a home without small children.
🐶Aster would thrive in a home that is calm, consistent, and with someone who understands collie breeds and/or are willing to learn how to work with them. She will need physical and mental stimulation because she is a keener, some might say a dog genius. A solo adventurer, a chillaxed couple, or a family with older children would be best for this gal. She can likely go to a home where there are cat and dog buddies with proper introductions. Her foster mom regrets her choices in not being financially responsible enough to have 4 animals in a single-income home. Otherwise, this would be an epic foster fail. Aster is an absolute gem!
