Nerf is very playful and affectionate but can become quite excitable. He enjoys play biting and may occasionally lunge toward faces in a teasing, non-aggressive way.
He is semi house-trained and understands that he should go to the bathroom outside, though he may have the occasional accident on carpet if his cues are missed. When he needs to go out, he will often get up from cuddling and start pacing the room, as his signal, he will not go to the door to let you know and tries to sneak off to poop in secret because he knows it is not ok. He sleeps calmly through the night without stirring and enjoys cuddling close.
Due to his separation anxiety, Nerf prefers someone nearby during mealtimes. He may not eat if left alone and will often look back periodically to check that you are still there. Similarly, he does not like being alone in the backyard and will wait by the door to come back inside if left on his own instead of exploring.
He is extremely friendly with people, loves attention, and does well with older children who can match his energy level, but he is very jumpy and does play bite when excited. On walks, he tends to wander rather than follow a straight path and can become highly fixated on other dogs, often whining or barking and can be very hard to get his attention back even if they are at a very far distance. He may also bark at passing people, reacting the same as he does to dogs, even though he is friendly when approached.
Nerf has very strong natural instincts for sniffing, digging, and hunting, and would likely thrive with lots of enrichment activities such as puzzle toys, tearing activities, digging, or agility training (agility is something I would very highly recommend as he loves to chase you with such focus and I believe this is something he would thrive in). He enjoys a game of tug or any squeaky toy and loves his Kong; he does not need anything durable; as he does not destroy his toys like most other dogs. He is very food-motivated and gentle when taking treats. His table manners are very good and he does not beg at the dinner table. He shows mild, improving resource guarding with food and toys but is corrected easily by a simple no. We have been petting his face while eating to desensitize him which has helped significantly. He does not chew household items, get into the trash, or display any indoor marking or territorial behaviour, though he does mark very frequently outside. He loves the snow; often choosing it over grass and even eating it for enjoyment (we thought it was because he was thirsty but he just likes eating it).
Nerf requires regular exercise and typically expects two to three walks per day, often waiting eagerly by the door. He poops quite often usually 5 poops per day. Overall, he is a loving and energetic dog whose goofy personality we all love. He would benefit from lots of mental stimulation, and continued support for his separation anxiety; preferably someone who works from home and is there everyday for him and loves walking and playing with him as much as he loves it. He would also do well in a house with kids who would love anyone playing with him continuously.
