Meet Bearnaise (Bear)! 🐾
Bear came to us from a high-kill shelter in California, where he was found as a stray. We braced ourselves for a long decompression period, but Bear had other plans. On night one, he made himself right at home: he ate his dinner, started counter surfing (still a work in progress), and offered us his paw completely unprompted.
One of the first things you'll notice about Bear is his eyes. They are absolutely stunning and totally one-of-a-kind. His irises don't go all the way around, and one eye is just a touch lighter than the other, giving him the most expressive and unforgettable face.
Bear also has a signature move: he'll come over, sit politely, offer his paw, and then dramatically flop onto his side for belly rubs. He is a huge love bug with an equally big, slobbery, drooly heart to match.
Ideal home
Bear would thrive in an active household with a yard. He loves his walks and has a nice amount of energy to burn, but he balances it out with lots of snuggle time too.
House manners
Bear knows the routine and goes to the door when he needs out, but he doesn't always fully empty himself right away. A consistent outdoor schedule, and maybe a little patience for a "victory lap," helps make sure he actually gets the job done.
Leash walking
He's great on leash, and honestly walks better than our resident dog, who's actually been to leash classes. He's been teaching her a few things.
Alone time
Bear isn't crate trained and does show some signs of separation anxiety. He may pace when left alone and can be prone to chewing things if unsupervised. He would do best with an adopter who can continue helping him build confidence being alone, whether through crate training or a gradual routine. The good news is that he's already making progress — he recently slept downstairs on the couch by himself overnight for the first time with no issues.
Counter surfing
Definitely still a work in progress, but he's responsive and will hop down as soon as he's asked.
Quirks
Bear has recently taken up couch-stashing — hiding treats in the cushions to save for later. It's giving squirrel energy in a 65-pound body.
Other dogs
Generally, Bear does well with other dogs. On walks, he's happy to say hello or sometimes just ignore them. He and our resident female dog haven't quite clicked, mostly because she likes to instigate and won't leave him alone, but he puts up with her as best he can.
Cats and kids
Unknown at this time — he hasn't been introduced to either yet.
Car rides
Excellent passenger. He just sits and enjoys the ride.
Energy level
Moderate and nicely balanced — curious and full of life, but not a livewire. He loves toys, especially his Kong stuffed with peanut butter and/or blueberries.
Noise level
Very quiet. We've only heard him bark maybe twice.
People
Total charmer. Strangers on walks consistently tell us he's the sweetest dog they've ever met, and honestly... we get it. He's the best. ❤️
