🍉 Meet Watermelon!

Watermelon is a sweet, hilarious and affectionate little pug with a BIG personality and an even bigger enthusiasm for life. Her foster family affectionately calls her their “little tornado” because Watermelon approaches pretty much everything at 110%.

She absolutely loves people and wants to be part of whatever her family is doing. She is playful, curious, energetic and incredibly affectionate. She is definitely a Velcro dog and will happily follow her favourite person from room to room just to make sure she isn’t missing anything.

Watermelon LOVES toys and isn’t particularly picky about which ones! She loves playing with all kinds of dog toys and especially enjoys fetch. She’s a high-energy little girl who loves to play and explore, but when she finally powers down, she’s also an excellent cuddler and loves curling up with her people for a nap.

❤️ Children

Watermelon loves children. She has developed a particularly sweet relationship with the child in her foster home. She seeks him out on her own for play and cuddles, sleeps with him and even goes to wake him up every morning.

She would likely love a family with children who are comfortable with an energetic, playful dog and would enjoy having an affectionate four-legged sidekick.

🐶 Other Dogs

Watermelon currently lives with another pug and generally does well with him. She enjoys having another dog around and is an enthusiastic player—sometimes a little too enthusiastic! She doesn’t always recognize when another dog has had enough and can continue trying to play until her foster brother becomes frustrated.

She’s still learning to respect those signals, so play should be supervised and both dogs should have opportunities for breaks and their own space. She could do very well with a compatible dog who enjoys her playful energy.

Watermelon has not been tested with cats, so her compatibility with cats is unknown.

🎓 Training & Walks

Watermelon came into foster care without many basic skills, but she has already made great progress in a very short time.

She’s responding much more consistently to her name and is beginning to understand “sit.” She’s very food-motivated and responds extremely well to positive-reinforcement training.

When she first arrived, Watermelon was quite reactive to other dogs on walks and would bark and become very excited when she saw them. With treats and consistent reinforcement, this has already improved significantly. She may still stop, posture or raise her hackles when she sees another dog, but she’s increasingly able to focus on her person without the barking. With continued positive reinforcement, she’s showing every indication that her leash manners will continue to improve.

🏠 House Training

Watermelon is not completely house-trained yet and has had occasional accidents in her foster home. Her future family should be prepared to continue potty training with frequent outdoor opportunities, consistency and positive reinforcement.

🥰 Being Alone

When Watermelon first arrived in foster care, she showed signs that looked like separation anxiety and became quite distressed when she couldn’t reach her person. However, as she’s settled in and learned that her humans always come back, this has improved significantly.

Her foster family has been practising periods of separation, and Watermelon complains less and settles more easily with each passing day. She may still protest at first, but she’s showing that she can adjust as she becomes secure in her routine.

That said, Watermelon is absolutely a Velcro dog. She bonds very closely with her people and, given the choice, would prefer to be wherever they are! She’ll likely thrive with a family that enjoys having an affectionate little shadow while continuing to help her build confidence with independent time.

🚗 Car Rides

Watermelon does well in the car and is comfortable going along for rides. She has been on a bed, leashed and she behaves well.

She still has things to learn, but she’s already shown in foster care that she can make impressive progress with consistency, positive reinforcement and, most importantly, snacks.
