Gilbert is a shy little dog who has come a long way during his decompression period. He is coming out of his shell more each day, but he still needs time to trust new people. Gilbert wants to give and receive affection—he simply needs a patient family that will allow him to move at his own pace.
Once Gilbert feels safe, his sweet and playful personality begins to shine. He loves playing with the resident dog and races around the backyard like a much bigger dog. He may be small, but he is a mighty little player! He also enjoys relaxing outside while his foster family gardens on warm summer days.
Gilbert’s favourite cuddle time is at night. He sleeps peacefully through the night in his foster mom’s bed and is gradually becoming more comfortable accepting love and affection. With continued patience and reassurance, he will likely become a wonderful couch companion.
When Gilbert feels overwhelmed, his first reaction is to retreat to his crate, where he feels safe and secure. He is very comfortable with his crate, but he is not confined in it during the day or overnight. The door is left open so he can choose to use it as his safe space whenever he needs some quiet time.
Gilbert lives with children and does well with them, but loud noises and sudden movements can frighten him and cause him to hide. A quieter home with respectful older children would be the best fit while he continues building his confidence.
He currently lives with two cats and generally leaves them alone, although he may occasionally bark when they cross paths. Sometimes Gilbert tries to play with them, but the cats quickly let him know they are not interested!
Gilbert is excellent with other dogs and may benefit from having a friendly, confident canine companion in his new home, although another dog is not required.
Gilbert loves collecting and hoarding his toys. He shares food, treats and toys very well and has shown no signs of food or resource guarding. He also enjoys sitting by the window, watching the world go by and barking when someone walks past.
Gilbert has had only a few accidents in the house and does very well when kept on a consistent bathroom routine. He travels well in the car and is currently working on his leash skills.

Gilbert deserves a patient and understanding family that will celebrate every step forward. He may need extra time to feel secure, but once he trusts you, his playful and loving nature begins to emerge. The family willing to give him that time will be rewarded with a very special little companion.
