Meet Rex (Tex)❤️
Rex is truly a wonderful dog. We don’t know much about the first 10 years of his life, but we do know he is a very smart dog that has adapted to house life astonishingly quickly! He doesn’t bark at the door, is fully house-trained (not a single accident, even at the shelter!), and walks loosely on a leash. He’s also perfectly content being home alone, leaving your house exactly as you left it. He doesn’t prefer being crated, but with his excellent house manners, free roam may be a great fit.
And you know the saying, “You can’t teach an old dog new tricks”? Well, that doesn’t apply to Rex! He's quickly picked up on new tricks and even a “let’s go” cue for when he’s spending a littleee too much time sniffing on walks.
Rex is an incredibly loyal, observant gentleman who likes to keep an eye on his surroundings. He notices slow-moving cars pulling alongside or people approaching at night, remaining calm but alert. At home, he likes to keep his loved ones within sight, whether that means sleeping beside your bed, relaxing on a cozy bed while you watch TV, or checking in for some bum scratches, belly rubs, and affection before returning to his post. He isn't one to climb onto the furniture but might take a quick nap in the big bed if you're not using it.
He's independent in the sense that he doesn't need to be attached to your hip but wishes to be in your company and be a part of your day. He's a confident boy, and not many environments seem to make him nervous. Take him to a park and he'll happily observe all the hustle and bustle around him. His favourite treats? Eggs and yogurt, of course, although I don't think Rex would turn down much!
If you’ve always dreamed of having a Shepherd or working breed but worried about the high energy and intensive training, Rex might just be your winning lottery ticket. Much of the hard work is already done! He still has it in him for a long walk or hike, although he’ll appreciate a good, long rest afterwards. He’d likely be just as happy with a backyard to explore, a short walk around the block, and a peaceful day of snoozing.
Rex is a senior boy looking for a relaxed lifestyle to enjoy his retirement. He may not care much about toys or high-energy play anymore, but his loyalty and love for his people certainly haven’t faded.
He would thrive in a calmer home with a nice backyard where he can watch the birds, enjoy the sunshine, and perhaps have a leisurely walk throughout the day for a little excitement. Retirees, older adults, or families with older children could be a wonderful fit for him.
Rex has spent 10 years becoming the dog he is today, and now it’s his turn to enjoy the good life. He has waited a long time for family, but never let his time waiting deter him from being the good boy he is. Even as a stray, he never forgot his house manners, and despite the people in his life changing, he has continued to open his heart to new ones.
He deserves a home that shows him what it means to be someone's best friend, where he can finally experience the comfort of knowing that family is forever. ❤️
A Few Things to Know About Rex:
Is Rex good with cats?
Rex has not been cat-tested. He has shown a high prey drive toward rabbits and other small, fast-moving animals, so a home with cats would require a slow, carefully managed introduction.
Is Rex good with other dogs?
Rex can be bossy with younger dogs; he likes to be in charge! However, a respectful younger dog or another older dog may be a good fit with proper introductions.
Is Rex good with children?
Yes! Rex is friendly and social with children he meets on walks. However, he is a senior and would prefer a calmer environment rather than high-energy play. Older children would likely be the best fit.
Does Rex bark?
No, Rex is a quiet boy!
Is Rex house-trained?
Absolutely! Rex has never had an accident, including during his time at the shelter.
Can Rex be left home alone?
Yes! Rex is wonderful when left alone. He settles comfortably and doesn't get into mischief. He isn't particularly fond of being crated, but his house manners are very deserving of free roaming.
Is Rex good in the car?
Car rides aren't his favourite, but he settles after approximately 20 minutes.
Is Rex good on a leash?
Rex walks with a loose leash and is incredibly nice to walk. However, he sometimes gets excited by other animals and wants to watch. He can bark at other dogs and gets very interested in rabbits. Since being on leash is new to him, he is currently working on these behaviours with a trainer.
