I know that everybody thinks they have the best dog in the world, and I know that everybody is correct. But in the case of Fogo I just happen to be a little more correct.

Fogo has absolutely crushed being a foster dog. He came to us fully house broken, not a single accident in the house. He sleeps in his crate all night, with minimal whining when you first put him in although he would MUCH prefer to be sleeping in your bed.

I wouldn’t say he has separation anxiety, but he does have a little bit of FOMO. He would like to be where you are, and he would like where you are to be the couch so he can cuddle up and snooze beside you. Snuggling and sleeping are two of his all time favourite activities. His only real non negotiable is he needs to go to a home where he has unrestricted access to the furniture!

He isn’t a total coach potato, however. He loves his walks! With his little legs it doesn’t take much to wear him out, and we’ve found a couple twenty to thirty minute walks a day satisfies him, but I imagine he would be perfectly happy to go for longer as well. He is also getting quite good at fetching his toy up and down our hallway!

We have not tested him outside of his crate home alone yet, but we have also never caught him chewing something he shouldn’t be, so I don’t think it would be a problem. Because I work hybrid he has not had to spend large amounts of time alone in his crate, but when he has we haven’t heard any barking or whining from him. We live in a townhome and haven’t received any complaints! He is also a pretty perfect work from home coworker, as all he wants to do is snooze on your lap or beside you!

He’s not totally silent, however, he will alert you to any dangers in and around your house. Those dangers include but are not limited to:

His own reflection in a dark window (important note, he has no problem with his reflection in a mirror, he knows how cute he is. That weird, distorted dog he sees in the reflection of a dark window though? He does not know that dog. That is his enemy. He wants nothing to do with him.)

When someone he forgot was in the house suddenly reenters the room. (This is not an every time thing, it is not even a most of the time thing, however occasionally he will lose track of who is in the room and will very bravely bark at whoever has left and then returned. He feels appropriate shame once he realizes the intruder is actually the person he was cuddling up to ten minutes ago.)

When it is dark during his morning walk and someone else has the audacity to walking outside as well. He lets them know he’s there, but can be redirected pretty quickly!

Fogo is the only dog in our foster home, but he regularly hangs out with my parents three (large, semi-misbehaved) dogs and does great! There was a little growling and barking when they first met, but once he realized they were gentle giants he was happy to play with them. As long as the introduction is handled properly I think he would do great in a home with another dog. That is sort of how he sometimes feels about meeting new people as well. Once he realizes they are just another set of hands to pet him, and another lap that he can nap on, he is all in. I think he would do well as either a solo dog in a home with lots of human attention, or with a patient dog companion. Because of his nervous and occasionally growly first introduction I think he would do best in a home with older kids!

He currently lives with a cat, and they have established some sort of truce in which she is disinterested in him, and he is respectful of said disinterest, but I think he’d do great with a dog-friendly cat!

“Does he know any tricks?” You ask. “No” I answer. But that is on us, he is very food motivated and loves his cookies so I can’t imagine it would take much to train him. We just haven’t. Forget I mentioned it.

All in all he’s been a pretty perfect house guest who I will miss very much!
