BackDalit (Delilah)
Adopted
Description
Female, 9 months, Shar Pei/border collie X, 30 lbs
There are so many things to say about this sweet girl. Delilah came to us extremely scared; she had never been in a home or around people really. It has taken us a while to build trust with her but once she starts to come out of her shell you can see she has so much love to give. She is very curious and likes to watch what we are doing and is slowly catching on to how being in a family works. Delilah absolutely loves her stuffed animals and chewing on her bene bone. House training is a work in progress, she is very good about going on her puppy pads and with frequent trips outside shouldn’t have too many accidents inside.
Delilah is going to need a very patient family willing to put in the time and effort to help her gain confidence around people and in her surroundings. She does not yet trust people and new environments and sounds are very scary for her. Delilah would thrive in a home with another dog, especially one who likes to play as much as she does. Being with her foster brother has helped her immensely in trying new things, and helping her allow her silly, playful and sweet personality to shine. They like to play all day long! That being said having another doggy companion in the house that she can lean on for guidance and support is important for her. She has liked all the dogs she has met so far, so big or small should be good. She has not been tested around cats but with her gentle personality she would probably do just fine with them too!
Delilah would do well in a home with older kids that can understand that fast movements and loud sounds are still very scary for her. Delilah has been nervous leaving her home when it comes to going on car rides, I believe she thinks she isn’t coming back and will get left with strangers, so getting her to the car is a bit of work but once she’s in, she enjoys the ride. She does not yet understand what those leashes are for and they are still a scary thing for her so she will need help building confidence with them and help understanding that they mean she’s going to go do something fun! Although Delilah has spent her life living outdoors she loves her home so much so that she hasn’t been wanting to go outside as much. It’s become her safe place and she may need help learning being outdoors isn’t a bad thing and that she will get to come back to her home.
Delilah sleeps through the night in her kennel but it can take a few treats to bribe her into going in. She is still learning not to chew on some things that she shouldn’t, for example her foster moms slippers, although she hasn’t touched any other shoes, as well as her foster dads hat. She also tends to lightly nip you as it’s her way of trying to play with you, but with continued correction it shouldn’t be an issue. Delilah has shown zero aggression or prey drive. She even likes to share toys with her foster brother and play tug of war! Food aggression also has not been an issue at all.
Delilah would do best in a home where her humans are home more then they are away as she still needs help learning all these new things and that she is able to trust her family. When she first meets you she may not come near you for a little while, but as the days go on she will show you her trust in you is building and it is a very rewarding feeing. She loves to give kisses as her way of showing her affection. Even though she needs a lot of patience and guidance I can tell she will blossom into the most loving and loyal dog.
Delilah is a beautiful, sweet and special girl. She deserves the absolute best and her forever family will be very lucky to have her as a member of their family.
Delilah is being fostered in Edmonton.
